1. A New Lens on Health: Catching Issues Before They Catch You
There’s a saying in medicine: “The body whispers before it screams.”Most chronic diseases do not suddenly appear—they build quietly over months or years. The tragedy is that many people only act when their health breaks down, not when it starts giving them subtle signals.
As a health professional, I’ve often seen people come to the pharmacy at a point when a health condition has already progressed — sometimes silently for years and diagnosed. Many chronic diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol, show little to no symptoms in the early stages. By the time physical signs appear, the body may already be compromised.
Regular health checks — like blood pressure monitoring, cholesterol and blood sugar tests, BMI and weight checks, and cancer screenings — are not just medical routines; they are practical expressions of wisdom and self-care.
Preventive health is not simply about living longer — it’s about living healthier, stronger, and more productive lives. At its core, it is the intentional decision to act early rather than wait for illness to dictate the course of our lives.
To begin any meaningful health prevention plan, it is important to ascertain the status of your physical health. A simple and/or comprehensive health check is the first line of action to be pursued and this gives you an indication of the status of your health and defines what preventive strategies are required.
Regular health checks play a pivotal and central role in this. They serve as a mirror to what’s happening beneath the surface — often revealing silent warning signs before they become crises.
2. Why Preventive Checks Are a Life Saving Strategy
In healthcare, we often say “what gets measured gets managed.” Health screenings and regular checks are not just for the elderly or those already diagnosed with conditions. They are a powerful tool for prevention for people of all ages.
When done consistently, they can:
- Detect conditions like hypertension and diabetes before symptoms appear.
- Prevent the progression of chronic diseases.
- Reduce the need for expensive treatments.
- Empower individuals to make informed health decisions.
This is especially important in a world where lifestyle-related illnesses are rising. Sedentary habits, poor diets, stress, and lack of rest are creating a perfect storm for preventable conditions.
3. Key Health Checks Everyone Should Prioritize — And Why
| Test / Check | Why It Matters | What It Can Prevent / Detect Early |
|---|---|---|
| Blood Pressure Check | High blood pressure rarely has symptoms. Early detection helps control it before complications arise. | Stroke, heart disease, kidney damage. |
| Blood Sugar (Fasting / HbA1c) | Identifies prediabetes and diabetes before complications set in. | Vision loss, heart disease, neuropathy. |
| Cholesterol / Lipid Profile | Tracks cholesterol levels. High cholesterol can build silently for years. | Atherosclerosis, heart attacks, strokes. |
| Weight / BMI / Waist Circumference | Helps detect obesity and metabolic risks early. | Hypertension, insulin resistance, diabetes. |
| Cancer Screening (e.g., breast, colon, prostate) | Early detection dramatically increases treatment success. | Cancer-related complications and premature deaths. |
| Physical Examination / Annual Review | Offers a holistic view of overall health and uncovers issues you may not even be aware of. | Early detection of multiple chronic conditions. |
Early detection often reduces treatment costs, prevents complications, and saves lives. It’s the difference between managing a small spark and fighting a wildfire.
4. Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore
While regular screenings are key, your body often gives subtle early signs that should not be overlooked:
- Unexplained weight changes
- Persistent fatigue
- Headaches or blurred vision
- Chest discomfort or shortness of breath
- Changes in bowel or urinary habits
- Frequent thirst or urination
- Non-healing wounds or recurrent infections
Fatigue or loss of energy can point to issues like anaemia, thyroid problems, sleep disorders, or even early heart disease.
Frequent headaches may signal high blood pressure or chronic stress.
Unexplained weight loss or gain can be an early sign of metabolic imbalance.
Persistent cough, breathlessness, or chest pain may hint at cardiovascular or respiratory problems.
Changes in mood, sleep, or concentration can indicate hormonal or mental health issues.
We often dismiss these as “just stress” or “I’ll be fine.” But early recognition can be the difference between a simple lifestyle change and a lifetime of treatment.
👉 Prevention starts with humility—admitting that our bodies need care and attention, not denial.
Listening to your body is part of preventive living. Delaying care often makes treatment harder and outcomes poorer.
5. Prevention Through Ownership — Practical Strategies
✅ Schedule annual or biannual health checks — even if you feel well.
✅ Know your numbers: blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and BMI.
✅ Maintain a health journal or use an app to track results over time.
✅ Act promptly when results are abnormal. Early intervention saves lives.
✅ Adopt daily lifestyle habits that promote prevention — balanced diet, physical activity, hydration, and adequate rest.
✅ Don’t normalize symptoms. Pain and discomfort are warning signs, not inconveniences.
Preventive health works best when ownership shifts from the healthcare system to the individual. You are your first line of defence.
6. A Biblical Perspective: Prevention is Wisdom, Not Fear
The Bible repeatedly highlights the wisdom of foresight, preparation, and stewardship — values that align beautifully with preventive health.
📖 1 Corinthians 6:19–20
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit… You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
Caring for our health is an act of worship and stewardship. Just as we service a car to prevent breakdown, regular health checks are a way of honouring the body God entrusted to us.
A health check is like a spiritual and physical service appointment — it helps us honour the temple God has given us.
When we neglect early warning signs, we indirectly neglect the very vessel God uses to accomplish His purposes in and through us.
📖 Proverbs 22:3
“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.”
This verse captures the essence of prevention. A prudent person sees risk ahead and acts wisely — whether in faith or health. A simple blood test or BP check can help us “take refuge” before danger arrives. Preventive health aligns perfectly with biblical wisdom: seeing potential danger early and acting wisely.
Regular screening allows us to identify risks before they manifest fully.
Just like a wise farmer watches the weather and prepares the soil before planting, a wise person monitors their health early rather than waiting for a crisis.
📖 Genesis 41:34–36
Joseph advised Pharaoh to store grain during years of plenty to prepare for famine.
Preventive health works on the same principle: act during strength to prevent crisis in the future. This principle of foresight applies equally to health:
In seasons of strength, we should invest in prevention.
Regular checks allow us to store knowledge and insight that can prevent years of avoidable suffering.
Prevention is often less costly, less invasive, and far more empowering than reactive treatment.
📖 James 2:17
“Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”
Trusting God for good health includes acting wisely — not passively waiting for things to happen.
📖 Luke 12:48
“…From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded…”
God entrusts us with our health. While we may not control every outcome, we are accountable for the choices we make daily.
Ignoring warning signs or neglecting regular checks when we have access to them is a form of poor stewardship.
Being proactive reflects a mature faith — one that partners with God through action.
7. Reflection and Prayer
In my years as a pharmacist, I’ve seen how prevention saves lives — not just in theory but in real people’s stories. Identifying warning signs early, getting regular checks, and taking ownership of one’s health can make a life-changing difference.
Timely interventions when I have had to take random blood pressure readings in my pharmacy of some of my clients have revealed readings so high and alarming that have required immediate and urgent referrals to emergency departments. To imagine what could have happened without these interventions.
I can’t emphasize the importance of regular health checks and in today’s world we are privileged to have technological advancements in science which allows these checks to be available.
God calls us to wisdom, not fear, and to stewardship, not neglect. Caring for your health is part of caring for the life God has given you.
🙏 “Lord, teach us to number our days and to steward our bodies wisely. Give us the courage to act early, the discipline to build healthy habits, and the wisdom to honour You with our health. Amen.”
🪴 Takeaway
“Preventive health isn’t about fear — it’s about foresight.
It’s about honouring the body God gave you so you can serve with strength, clarity, and longevity.”Remember, whether you are a Christian, of another faith, or still seeking your spiritual path, I’m glad you’re here.
